Managed Dedicated Servers v Shared Web Hosting

by Ben Ingham

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting where the client leases an entire server not shared with other users.

Normally a large range of hardware is available typically based around Intel cpu’s Athlon cpu’s. Dual, single, and quad cpu servers can be usually be rented.

This is more flexible than budget shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server, including the type of server operating system (typically linux based or Windows). Normally you can get a wide range of hardware, including server memory, disk drive and cpu.

Server maintenance is usually provided by the hosting company as an add-on option. In many instances a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment.

Dedicated servers are most often housed in vast data centers, in major cities where there are large concentrations of power and where there are large network suppliers hubs. Quite often the dedicated server host rents facilities or a suite at the data centre, in the form a single rack, cage or an entire suite and can call on 24 hour technicians to offer hands on service.

A server colocated in a large data centre has the benefit of backup power supplies and HVAC. In contrast to colocation, the server hardware is owned not owned by the customer. but by the hosting provider. In some cases they will provide support for your operating system or applications.
